This ongoing series of conferences at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation gathers professionals from architecture, engineering, and material sciences to discuss advanced uses of particular materials. The first conference was concerned with glass; the second, concrete; and the third, metals.
Post Ductility: Metals in Architecture and Engineering, 2009
Solid States: Changing Time for Concrete, 2008
The second conference examined concrete's ubiquity as a material as well as developments in its deployment. Of particular emphasis in the conference were aspects of time, and how it is important to the manufacture of concrete. This was a point of departure for the graphic identity of the conference. So, rather than reflecting the static nature of the material, we saw concrete as a material that manifests itself in a dynamic process, arriving slowly in its final form.
Engineered Transparency, 2007
Discussion in the first conference was concerned with developments in glass architecture. The graphic identity of the conference suggests transparency through the layering of simple line segments at various orientations in certain areas. Minimal means for optimal effects.
