Working 05 is the latest edition of Rice School of Architecture's publication of student work and research. For this edition the School wanted to feature seven Master of Architecture thesis projects, rather than the typical survey of student work. Perhaps because of the interesting ways that all of the projects dealt with topography, whether natural or constructed, we chose to organize the seven projects by elevation – from a vertical zoo in Tokyo to a (mostly) below-grade infrastructural solution for the redevelopment of New Orleans. Each project corresponds to a particular datum line, making elevation relational throughout the book. Die cutting the cover, a purely sectional move, then seemed to be the logical complement to this fixation with elevation elsewhere in the book.
