When responding to a questionnaire that simply asked, "Why do you make films?" Wim Wenders, a bit flustered by the question, paraphases Paul Cezanne: "Things are disappearing. If you want to see anything, you have to hurry." Wenders recalls the idea as it presents an important task for the image maker, especially those interested in the city. Why hurry? For nostalgia? Not really, because there is not an interest in returning to some fabled condition. Rather, it is something more fundamental: the documentarian's desire to show things as they are.
